Syringomyelia

2008-11-29 10:56:14

I know quite a bit about now too, thanks to your prompting! ;^)
I'm pretty good at web searches, have my own medical encyclopedias,
and access to technical journals... and I'm a quick study. I also
have a friend who had a brainstem stroke, (bleed) and the "only"
thing they could find wrong was that her foramen magnum
area was about 40% of the normal size. She didn't appear to have the
standard Chiari herniation of the cerebellum.
And it doesn't hurt that my job involves calculations of CSF flow in
the spine and brain.

Diet, weight

2008-11-27 19:00:08

Michele that is how I lost...if one deprives themselves of everything when
you do loose what you want weight wise you have a tendancy to go nuts and
the other way ... As a former bodybuilder and aerobics instructor I've seen
alot of this...I learn that we all are different and can't depend on the
"diet" but look at food as a way of life and health...I've seen too many guys
and gals wanting a quick fix and that is impossible and stay healthy...
I agree that weight watchers really can be a good way to go...and from there
just watch how you cook, drink more water, watch what ya eat and maybe WHY
you have a tendency to over indulge...Genes sure don't help us
either...there is a gene that is deep in our thalamus that the scientist are
looking at now that may trigger our other genes to put our fat in high gear.
Many of us strokesurvivors are prone to this also...so if the scientist can
pin point it that would really help us alot....So right now as
strokesurvivors we are stuck...many of us can't exercise like we did one
time (brother it sure cramped my style!LOL!) and the biggest thing we MUST
do is learn to love ourselves like we are and accept ourselves...we can't
help what we have gone through...just learn a new life style... You are so
right...slow and steady wins the race...
Now I will get off my soapbox!LOL!

Harlan,
Syringomyelia is one disease I know ALOT about. We call it SM for short.
Another disease that often accompanies SM is called Chiari. That's Arnold
Chiari Malformation for long, and ACM for short. I will teach you about them,
but only if you let me know that you want me to. These are the two nasty
diseases that my hubby has. They bring lots of complications to life. Anyway,
have a good night.

My balance

2008-11-26 12:10:38

My balance sucks majorly now, especially when i try to move my head
suddenly to the side or something, then it makes me fall :( Looking
up makes me dizzy, I had a brainstem too.

Loss of

2008-11-26 09:15:43

Loss of confidence? what about your self-esteem, self-worth, emotion
and anger control? These are just the tip of the iceberg. You have
to find whatever it is you're good at and do it as well as you can.
This improves the self-confidence levels greatly so does
accomplishments. It's been almost 4 years for me but has come
around greatly. Getting into public settings and doing things with
other people too helps to get you out of your house and back into
the community. It's very important that none of us become like
hermits. Too easy to feel sorry for yourself then. That is not a
good emotion for us.

Re: Plate

Frank,
We've moved "BORTON" from car to car since 1977. Your trick will be to find
a name not already in use, and there aren't many ways to vary "STROKE" or
"SURVIVOR"(maybe "SRVIVR"?)
Good luck, Brian

Plate

2008-11-25 17:46:31

Hey all, I pose a question:
I'm thinking of getting a handicapped license plate for my truck, they have
a new plate with a small handicapped symbol in front of the numbers. I was
thinking of getting a personal plate, I can have six or seven letters, not sure.
I wanted something like SURVIVOR, but as you can see, it's eight letters. Maybe
STROKE or STROKEE. I was hopeing youguys could give me some ideas. Thanks,
hope all is well. Luv you all.

Did I say that after I had the stroke (at age 25) a doctor discovered
I had mitral valve prolapse?
In any case, docs put me on an exercise program and diet that caused
me to take off about 20 pounds - at the time of the stroke (1987) I
was about 150 pounds, so when I got married (4 years later, to a man
I met after the stroke), I was looking good.
Well, now I'm around 200. Sixteen years is a long time to relax about
all the input you received when you experienced a critical
event...thing is, now I understand obesity can complicate
hysterectomy (and is a big risk factor for another stroke).
Is anyone feeling up to sharing about weight-loss strategy? I avoid
high-fat foods, always did, but I know I have a =big= problem with
portion control. And with depression, which is tied directly to
weight, imho!
Sheri, Cassie, and Timmy: I was astonished to see so many triad
members on this list, I am an adoptive parent myself (two children
with special needs, placed at ages 9 and 11). I self-identify more as
an adoptive parent than as a stroke survivor, in truth. But the
stroke is why my husband and I turned to adoption - hubbie was
unwilling to take a chance with my health.
Well, hysterectomy sounds like a big chance w/my health - anybody
know any data on stroke occurring during recovery from surgery?

looking at print for long periods of time and I have a weird form of aphasia

Re: loss of confidence

2008-11-16 17:43:47

Hi
I had a stroke November 21st 2002 and lost my confidence in the whole world
outside my front door. Read my story on walking home for the first time at
www.differentstrokes.co.uk message board -
David Hutchison
I would suggest walking with another person as I did to gain your confidence.
Walk outside your front door to put the litter out, then walk a little further
and then further, until you get to your goal.
After you have had enough trips with the other person and you are happy and
familiar with the walk, do it bit by bit yourself.
My mouth becomes very dry and I find it hard to swallow (I could not swallow for
12 days following my stroke and still have laboured swallowing) when I become
anxious.

loss of confidence

2008-11-16 09:13:41

Hi to all,
I have been following your news group for a while now. I have never
joined a news group before but it seems like a modern day CB radio.
Let me introduce myself I am a 33 year old that had a stroke last
September. It affected my right side arm, leg and I lost the ability
to speak, though that is more less back now to how it was before the
stroke. I left Addensbrokes hospital on the 5th December last year.
I was doing really well 3 months ago, walking up to 3 miles a day
recently I have had a loss of confidence where my foot will invert
when I get apprehensive which will affect my walking. The local shop
20 meters across the road became impossible, and I was stuck inside
for 2 weeks. I use to be able to rely on my leg moving when I began
to fall, but now I just freeze to the spot. Has anyone else had this
and how did they over come it?
It would be good to hear from anyone,
Take care,
Graham.

i don't drive and my daughter who lives with me is still too young
yet, and shes out most of the time, so i'm a bit stuck. i make myself
walk, every day, the distance depends how good i'm feeling. mostly i
wait for my mum and dad to come and take me places, like grocery
shopping, but they are so over protective that i feel i'm so
much 'iller' when they go home lol. Kristi my ex was very anti social
too, and one way or another over the years it was easier not to have
friends, which i deeply regret now-most days you guys at stroketalk

Henning's birthday

2008-11-13 19:45:06

Hi all,
On 7 May (every year!) I have my birthday - through the grace of God I have
survived the stroke and I am grateful to positively try to change other
stroke-survivors.
Have a GREAT day!

Trains! I haven't been on one since spending two weeks traveling through
Great Britain in 1981, long before my stroke. I think karen and I should
look into doing some Amtrak travel, but I'd need assurance about
accessibility issues. Always that!

residual effects; signs of a stroke

2008-11-10 04:26:27

"is true that there are =always= residual effects?"
I have absolutely no residual effects...that anyone
can see. I do have a grey "hole" in my vision. When
I am about a foot away from someone, looking straight
at their face, their right eye is totally missing to
me. Very strange and a constant reminder of my
stroke.
Regarding signs. I had NONE of the signs that they
say to look for. I woke up, opened my eyes, looked in
the mirror and could only see about half my face. I
got dressed, got my child ready for school and DROVE
(like an idiot) to work. A co-worker told me I needed
to go to the ER. I did and they did an eye chart test
- of course I got 20/20 b/c my acuity had not changed,
just me field of vision. They promptly referred me to
an optometrist. I was in the ER for about 10 minutes.
The optometrist ordered a CT scan which showed
nothing. It was kinda funny b/c I did not develop a
headache (in the lower back of my head) until the
doctor started talking about a CT scan. I told him
that HE was giving me a headache by talking about what
the problem could be (stroke or tumor). The MRI that
I had TWO WEEKS LATER clearly showed a clot in my
occipital lobe. My vision returned to normal, except
the "hole", in just a few days.
Now I know to consult a doctor with ANY unusual
neurological event b/c strokes don't alway come in the
"classic" form.
Afterward, I absolutely noticed that I forgot things
very easily - don't know if this was stroke-related or
stress-related. It got better in a few months.

Re: Stroke ? for Brian/TO TIMMY

2008-11-09 16:36:05

Timmy:
My stroke came a few minutes past noon on a sunny Sunday in September 1999.
my wife was away for the weekend, and I was painting the front of the
house.. ii stopped to chat with a neighbor, and a few minutes later I keeled
over into my driveway. I had no warning until my speech became gibberish,
and I had no predisposing conditions. Even my weight was good, as I had just
shed 80 pounds. The neurologist here at our little hospital predicted the
Portland doctors would find a hole in my heart. She was right, as they found
a PFO in the wall between the upper chambers of my heart. It's still there,
but coumadin keeps my blood thinned to prevent another clot.

I received Stroke Networ's newsletter today and here is a good
example of how Steve likes to operate.
"Quote"
Probably the biggest improvement has been the addition of the Quick
Links web page. A member mentioned to me how difficult it is for him
to negotiate the dropdown menu. Nobody has mentioned this before as
being an obstacle to navigating the web site. Now, you can just
click on the Quick Links button on the homepage and then click on
the hyperlink of your choosing. The dropdown menu is nice for
navigating to all the important web pages on our site but now
hopefully everyone will have easy access
Hummm funny...I mentioned the same thing to him about a month ago.
I pointed out that I had some diffuculty navigating the site and I'm
an advanced user of the computer. I see he changed this. Good
though I'm glad he made it more accessible. I would rather remain
in the background anyway.

stroke in 1987, now hysterectomy

2008-11-07 04:57:05

Hi Folks.
I am new to this list. I had a stroke in 1987 (age 25), no cause
identified. I was a smoker, had MSG for lunch that day, was on my
period (1st day that day), and got migraine headaches...many
contributors, no single reason established. Image technology now is
much more sophisticated!
I'm posting because now my OB-GYN says I need a hysterectomy. The
only other option is to go on hormones, a no-no for stroke survivors.
Has anybody here undergone a hysterectomy after a stroke? Anything I
should know?
Also, my PCP says he does not believe I had a stroke (confirmed
in '87 by spinal tap), because he sees no residual effects. I have a
facial twitch that does not show up often; I did not mention that. Is
is true that there are =always= residual effects?

I was driving a couple of days ago and I was sitting at a stop light not far
from my home. I always turn right at that light to come home. Well I found
that I had just put the car in park instead of putting the turn signal on. I
realized it as soon as I did it. The car behind me probably thought I was
crazy, BUT OH WELL! My husband said "I'm sure their are a lot of people that do
that". I don't care about that, what worries me is what if I do it while
actually rolling down the street? SCREEEEEEECH!!!! I HATE DRIVING NOW...
